Day 3 - Chicago, IL

We started our day in Cleveland and are ending it in Chicago. We did some pretty standardly touristy Chicago things like walking along Lake Michigan and checking out Cloud Gate and Buckingham Fountain. But our absolute favorite was Lurie Garden. We chatted with a local who showed us a video he took of the family of foxes that live there! A true urban oasis. 




While we usually prefer to look at plants, we did manage to appreciate some architecture as well.


We were on the road for about another 6 hours again today. Yesterday's vineyards in New York today turned into corn fields in Ohio and Indiana, patiently awaiting their moment in the sun. The weather was again beautiful for driving, very similar to yesterday. For dinner we ate pizza along the river as we watched tour boats and kayakers traverse the waters. 

We entered a new time zone at some point in Indiana. Now we are tired and are going to go to bed early in an attempt to stick to our East coast schedule as long as possible. We have a couple longer days ahead of us so we'll need our rest. Our destination tomorrow is Alberta Lea, MN.

      I just looked this up and see these are the towers on the cover of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot! I had no idea! I mean, obviously I knew, which is why I took the photo... and why we listened to that album on the way... Quite honestly we might have! I'm going to say I knew all this subconsciously.

Halfway

After leaving Olympic and heading south along the Oregon coast, it's really starting to feel like we've finished the trip to the Pacific. We've seen a lot of the coast the last couple days. It's rocky and beautiful and windy . But also we've been on the road for about 3 weeks, visited four of the six national parks we're going to see, and driven through 14 states. Soon we'll turn around, spending the next three weeks first up in Portland, then Seattle, then Glacier, and then driving east for a week. Route 20, which starts in Kenmore sq. Boston is the longest road in the US at 3,365 miles, and we've spent a lot of time driving parallel to it (on rt 90, the longest interstate highway in the US). In fact, our cabin by Yellowstone Lake was right off of 20, near where the road originally ended before they extended it all the way to the west coast. Day 1 - Syracuse, NY

  We left Somerville this morning and are ending our day today in Syracuse, NY. We were on the road for about 6 hours and made tacos for dinner - delicious, tacos never disappoint. The audio highlight of the day was listening to the latest This American Life episode, Must Be Rats on the Brain  - it's us against them. And the visual highlight of the day was crossing the Hudson River - an impressively big river. Our destination tomorrow is Cleveland, OH which will be a similar amount of time on the road, but we don't have to worry about cleaning and packing up so it will be a piece of cake. Days 37-43 - Driving home

  We made it home safe! Here were our stops on the way after Glacier: Butte, MT Billings, MT Bismark, ND Minneapolis, MN Chicago, IL  Clearfield, PA Somerville, MA Montana Tristan's road trip pro tips Nice views, but they say the speed limit on rt 90 is 80 mph when half of it is twisty mountain passes, and then it feels like they're doing road construction on all the flat bits. When they do road work they shut down an entire half of the highway and make everyone split the other direction with half of us driving the "wrong" way. There's wayyy too many stores/restaurants/motels with "Grizzly" in their name even though bears are  godless killing machines .  4 / 5 Stars North Dakota We hit the beginning of the Canada wildfire smoke in North Dakota.
